Media Release - NSW Tidy Town 2008 Overall State Winner

Congratulations Dorrigo!  The Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Tidy Town 2008 Overall State Winner.

Dorrigo, in the north coast hinterland, is a deserving winner of the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2008 Overall State Tidy Town Winner.

Dorrigo is a passionate community taking immense pride in their wonderful natural resources including the Dorrigo World Heritage listed rainforest.  With a population of approximately 1,000 people, Dorrigo has strong volunteer support and local business involvement.  Dorrigo has participated in Tidy Towns for many years and has been particularly successful in the Schools Environment Award. Dorrigo High School has received numerous awards including Overall State Winning School in 2002 and 2005.

The 2007 Tidy Towns’ Assessor, Chris Jeffreys of the “Do the right thing” program run by the Packaging Stewardship Forum describes just why Dorrigo is the State’s top town.

“There is a high level of community participation that goes towards the beautification and overall presentation of Dorrigo.  Hundreds of volunteer hours are contributed every month through mowing, planting, weeding, clearing, constructing or welcoming people to the visitors centre. This is what makes Dorrigo such a vibrant and close knit village.

“The community have been working closely with Bellingen Shire Council to preserve local history with the development of a Heritage Committee. In addition, the council has a heritage fund which pays for up to half of restoration works.”

The Chair of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW, Dawn Fardell MP reinforced the Tidy Towns Assessor's comments and the State Judges' decision.

"Dorrigo is a town which displays enormous community pride, they are quite achievers but now the secrets out and Dorrigo will have to own up to their hard work, commitment and enthusiasm. We look forward to highlighting Dorrigo as the 2008 Overall State Tidy Town Winner so that other towns around the State can learn from their successes."  Said Dawn Fardell MP, Chair, Keep Australia Beautiful NSW.

Peter McLean, Chief Executive Officer of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW congratulates Dorrigo as deserving winners of the 2008 Overall State Tidy Town Award.

"Dorrigo has continued to raise the standard of Tidy Towns in NSW.

"The extensive partnerships shown across all activities undertaken in Dorrigo was one of the distinguishing features in awarding Dorrigo as the 2008 Overall State Tidy Towns Winner.  Businesses, community groups, council, schools and individuals all collaborate together and contribute to making Dorrigo a sustainable community. Working together through careful consultation has clearly made these partnerships long lasting successes", highlighted Peter McLean, Chief Executive Officer of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW.

Each Overall Tidy Town winner was analysed by a State judging panel to determine the Overall 2008 State Tidy Town Winner.  Overall Tidy Town Award recipients are:
