Healthy Rivers Program – Community Input RequestedLast modified: February 7, 2008 - 1:11 PM
Council is seeking is seeking community input to assist the development of the Bellinger and Kalang Healthy Rivers plans. Bellingen Shire Council’s River Keeper, Tania Malone said, “Residents in the Bellingen Shire have identified that water quality in the Bellinger and Kalang Rivers is a key priority, and concerns have been expressed regarding declining water quality and river health issues. In response to these concerns, and together with the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Council is developing the Bellinger and Kalang River Health Plans.” Stating that the aim of these plans will be to improve water quality through improved management practices, Ms Malone said, “To ensure they are practical and realistic, and reflect the key issues and priorities of the residents of Bellingen Shire and other groups who can impact on the rivers we need to consult with a range of people. This includes landholders adjacent to the rivers, industry groups, agencies and the community generally.” To ensure that all groups have the opportunity to participate in the consultations, the process will be undertaken in stages. Stage 1 will focus on the Bellinger River, incorporating the major tributaries. Stage 2 will focus on the Kalang River. Both stages will include discussions with landholders along and adjacent to the rivers as well as consultations with communities and groups surrounding the rivers. Contact will also be made with those Dorrigo residents who registered their interest in the in Healthy Rivers Program with Council. In the next week landholders along and adjacent to the Bellinger River will be receiving a letter inviting them to participate in these consultations. Ms Malone stated, “If you are one of these landholders and you do not receive a letter, but would like to participate, please contact me at Bellingen Shire Council.” In addition, a series of community consultations will be held in the various townships and community areas surrounding the Bellinger River. Notice of these consultations will be published in the local papers, in the local notice areas in the various townships, as well as at the Council. In addition, contact will be made with the residents who registered their interest in the program. For further information and to book a time for your consultation, please contact Tania Malone at Council's Administrative Office on 66557353 or email tmalone@bellingen.nsw.gov.au.
