Bellingen Shire to be Showcased in New Customer Contact Centre

Relocation of the Bellingen Branch Library.

The relocation of the branch library in Bellingen to new contemporary premises will enable the old building to be transformed into a major showcase and customer service facility for the Bellingen Shire.

At its meeting on Tuesday, Council endorsed the development of the ‘Waterfall Way Centre' for the historic building - a multi-purpose venue designed to support tourism, attract new residents and businesses, and provide a showcase and sales point for events and the arts.

Bellingen Shire Mayor, Cr Mark Troy, said "The proposal offers maximum utilisation of this gateway site. The Waterfall Way Centre will be the natural meeting and contact point between the Shire's businesses, events and Council, and our visitors, customers, residents and investors.

The concept fits strongly with the Shire's Tourism and Economic Development plans, offering an increased focus on the creative industries, promotion and business development," he said.

The Waterfall Way Centre will be the premier customer service point for the Coffs Coast hinterland and the magnificent Waterfall Way corridor, providing a range of services for visitors, residents and businesses.

Bellingen Shire Tourism Manager, Brian Stokes, said "This is a great example of how Bellingen Shire Council is working hard to bring businesses and communities together across the Shire.

Not only will the Waterfall Way Centre offer a high profile customer service point, it will also contribute enormously to the development of the public precinct in Bellingen Council Park, complementing the soon to be completed new branch library, Museum, Council's administration centre, a range of community services and the lovely parkland itself. What a beautiful place for visitors and locals to come together and learn more about what the Shire and Coffs Coast hinterland has to offer," he said.

The proposal for the Centre was submitted by the Bellinger's peak tourism industry group, Tourism Bellinger, on behalf of a wide group of interests, including the Shire's business community, Arts Mid North Coast, National Parks and Wildlife Service and Landcare.

"These elements are part of what makes the Bellinger such an enriching place to visit and live," said Tourism Bellinger CEO, Laurie Kane. "We have brought together all the groups that make up the vibrant fabric of the area and its community, so we can showcase them to the world, and attract visitors, new residents and businesses," he said.

The Waterfall Way Centre will offer a visitor centre service, events box office and merchandising, promotional displays and materials, showcasing of local arts, business development and training programs, and interpretations of the importance of the local environment to the Shire's wellbeing.

The centre will be co-managed by Council and Tourism Bellinger.

The proposal was one of several submitted to Council by local community-based groups to use the premises which will be vacated when the Bellingen branch library moves into the refurbished Council administration centre in June.  It is anticipated that The Waterfall Way Centre will be open and operating in time to promote and sell the popular Bellingen Jazz & Blues Festival.
