Endorsed Growth Management Strategy

Last modified: September 10, 2009 - 3:12 PM

The Director-General of the Department of Planning has endorsed the Bellingen Shire Growth Management Strategy, pursuant to clauses 20 and 38 of the North Coast Regional Environmental Plan, subject to a number of conditions.  Please click on the link below to view the endorsed Strategy.  Copies are availalbe from Council at the cost of $28.

Mr Hannavy, Council's Director of Environmental Health and Planning, said that "the Department congratulated Council on the Strategy and went on to commend Council in its approach to the overall planning outcomes in the Strategy".

Mr Hannavy stated that "Council considered a report at its Ordinary Meeting held on the 12 June 2007 detailing the Directors conditional endorsement of the Strategy. The letter from the Department advised Council that the Director-General did not support the inclusion of a number of areas identified in the Strategy for large lot residential (rural-residential) which included an area west of Bellingen along Waterfall Way and an area identified on the plateau off Tyringham Road. The letter also provided that further investigation was needed before the Director could support the inclusion of land for residential development located near the Bellingen Cemetery."

"Council resolved at its meeting to endorse the Departments comments and remove those areas for which the Director-General's support was not forthcoming"

The Strategy is in the process of being amended to reflect the Department's directions and the final version of the Strategy will be placed on Council's web site, once finalised, for all to view. Hardcopies will also be placed in Council's libraries and administration building.

Council will begin the process of implementing the Strategy. This will involve rezoning those lands so identified in the endorsed Strategy.

"Interested members of the community are reminded to keep following this important process as you will again be able to have input when the rezoning of the areas identified in the Strategy takes place", Mr Hannavy said. He went on to thank all those people who took the time to make a submission and be involved in the development of the revised Strategy. Council will endeavour to correspond with all those people who made a submission on the Strategy to inform them of the Directors decision and the process from here on in.
