Cr Stephen (Steve) Jenkins now resides in Dorrigo following a diverse and distinguished career spanning over 34 years with the Queensland Police Service. Geographically, Steve served in many parts of Queensland including Brisbane, Townsville, Tully, Cairns, Cooktown, Mount Isa and numerous other rural and remote localities including the Indigenous communities of Doomadgee and Mornington Island.
Functionally, Cr Jenkins’s career has incorporated many facets of policing including: general duties, criminal investigations, forensic crash investigations, search and rescue coordination, disaster management, police communications centre operations and management, and project management. He gained extensive managerial experience from being an officer-in-charge of various stations and sections, and as a District Inspector and Regional Professional Practices Manager.
Prior to his retirement in January 2017, Cr Jenkins spent three years managing the fleet of ~4,000 vehicles and appliances operated by the Queensland police and fire and emergency services, and the Queensland Police’s Water Police vessel fleet. Collectively, these fleets have a capital replacement value of approximately $600 million, with annual replacement and fit-out costs amounting to approximately $70 million.
Cr Jenkins has been awarded the National Emergency Medal, National Police Service Medal, National Medal, Queensland Police Service Medal, and citations for the 2010 - 2011 Queensland Flood and Cyclone, Queensland Police Sesquicentennial, and the G20. He was also a recipient of the 2013 Award for Excellence in Corporate and Support Services for his involvement with the Information and Communication Technology's Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) Project.
Cr Jenkins has also holds numerous academic qualifications including Master’s Degrees in: Business Administration, Police Management, Project Management (Business Administration), Community Development (Emergency Management), Technology Management (Risk Management), a Graduate Diploma in Disaster Management, and a Bachelor of Social Science (Emergency Management). He also has five Diplomas in: Public Safety (Policing), Justice Administration, Business Management, Search and Rescue Coordination, and Sustainability, and has previously completed courses in Assessment and Workplace training, and Workplace health and Safety. Cr Jenkins is currently completing a Doctorate in Business Management.
Outside his employment, Cr Jenkins is the National President of the Australian Institute of Emergency Services, and the Institute’s representative on the Commonwealth Government’s Australian Emergency Management Volunteer Forum. He has also been a Mentor with Griffith University’s Industry Mentoring Program, and guest lecturer at the Institute of Disaster Management of the National University of Public Service in Budapest, Hungary. Cr Jenkins is a Committee Member of the Chamber of Commerce in Dorrigo.
