Bellingen's Local Heritage Assistance Fund has been successfully operating for 20 years.  Since its inception, assistance has been provided to a variety of projects over the years; from the reinstatement of architectural features and fences, to the painting of homes and community halls, to the restoration of shop fronts, dairies and even a rural outdoor dunny!

Heritage Advisory Service

The Heritage Advisory Service offers free professional advice from Bellingen Shire Council's Heritage Advisor who visits Bellingen monthly or bi-monthly, as demand dictates. The advisory service is available to people who are planning on restoring, renovating, extending or redeveloping heritage listed buildings including non-listed buildings that are located within the Bellingen Conservation Area.

This advice can include appropriate colour schemes, best practice methods of undertaking conservation work, suitable ways of extending or renovating heritage listed buildings as well as more comprehensive advice on the integration of new development in heritage conservation areas.

The free advice is of a general nature and should be considered as the starting point for more extensive work that may require an architect, builder or designer.  Advice is available at all stages of a project from the feasibility stage through to the design stage. Bellingen Shire Council encourages owners to use this service during the initial design stage. The Heritage Advisor also assesses applications for the Local Heritage Assistance Fund in conjunction with Council’s Strategic Planner.

Appointments with Council’s Heritage Advisor can be made by contacting Council’s Senior Strategic Planner, Daniel Bennett on (02) 6655 7300.
