The Australia Day Committee is delighted with the announcement that renowned chef, businessman and author David Bitton has been named as Bellingen Shire’s Australia Day Ambassador for 2018.
Born in France, David began his apprenticeship at La Colombes in Paris at the age of fifteen. He continued progressing into top establishments across France, before moving to Australia on Anzac Day 1991, to continue his stream of success in both Sydney and Melbourne restaurants.
In 2000 Bitton Gourmet was born, originally a very small coffee shop which has now expanded into a thriving community. David is the Managing Director, and his experience and style influences all the menus, from the a la carte to degustation dinners. His passion and French flair is what makes Bitton and its French-Australian cuisine unique. The Bitton Gourmet product range, inspired by David’s French/Moroccan heritage, and his wife’s Indian, South African background, now sells to 600 fine food stores nationally and internationally.
2011 saw the 10 year anniversary of Bitton and was celebrated with the launch of David’s first cookbook. Bitton – A French-inspired Café Cookbook is a collection of 50 recipes from his French training and apprenticeships, his various positions within the 5 star hotel industry and of course his beloved Café and Bistro in Alexandria. This pictorially beautiful book sold an unprecedented 60,000 copies through corporate channels nationally.
David is a creator and a visionary who constantly betters himself in business. In turn, he takes great pride in giving back to small businesses and mentors by drawing on his own experiences and mistakes made. He is passionate about the food industry and is always up to date with the latest movements and trends.
Bellingen Shire Mayor, Cr Dominic King said “it will be a real honour for our Shire to host such a talented and inspirational Australia Day guest and I hope David will take the opportunity to sample some of the local cuisine during his visit as well as seeing first hand the focus our community has on local food.”
The official Bellingen Shire Australia Day Community Awards presentation will be held on Friday 26 January 2018 at the Urunga Foreshore, Morgo Street Urunga, commencing at 8.30am with barista coffee and light refreshments followed by the official Citizenship and Awards Ceremonies at 9.30am.
