Bellingen Shire Votes to proceed with Native Title Application

On Monday 6 November 2017 Council voted to sign a Section 87 Agreement under the provisions of the Native Title Act 1993 in respect to an application for determination of native title at Wenonah Head at Urunga.

The application was initially made in June 1998 on behalf of the Gumbaynggirr people over an area of land and waters in the vicinity of Wenonah Head. Bellingen Shire Council expressed an interest in ensuring that a suitable level of public access be maintained to this area as part of any determination.

Following a number of amendments in terms of the extent of the claim and input from other stakeholders such as the Coffs Harbour & District Local Aboriginal Land Council and the NSW Government, the matter has progressed to the point where the interests of all parties have been adequately represented in the form of an agreement under Section 87 of the Native Title Act 1993.

Bellingen Shire Mayor, Cr Dominic King said “I am very pleased that this long standing application has now reached a point where everybody’s interests have been suitably addressed.  This is a very significant milestone for the Gumbaynggirr people and I am pleased to have been a part of the process.”

Council voted to sign an agreement that signifies its acceptance of the proposed access arrangements which will allow the matter to proceed to final determination in December 2017.
