Clean Up Australia Day is happening again on March 4 2018. Some dedicated community groups have already registered and are looking for volunteers to help clean up our natural environment. If you have an area that you are interested in cleaning up or your want to volunteer at a site please go to www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au.
Organisers of sites will be sent a free clean up kit with officially marked clean up bags and gloves to help with the collection of waste and recyclables. Any site supervisors are encouraged to contact Council, on 6655 7300, regarding disposal of rubbish and recycling collected on the day.
“Registering a local site and participating is a great way to get rid of rubbish that is accumulating on neighbourhood streets and beaches, in parks, bushland and waterways” said Bellingen Shire Council Mayor Dominic King. “With the beginning of the Container Deposit Scheme in December 2017 this is a great opportunity to minimise the amount of litter in our environment and keep it down into the future”.
The first Clean Up Australia day was held in 1990 and it has since become Australia’s largest community based environmental event. Over the years, volunteers have donated more than 31 million hours at over 166,000 locations across the country and together they have removed the equivalent of 331,000 ute loads of rubbish.
