Mental Health Month Community BBQ a great success

Dorrigo's Mental Health Month BBQ

The Community BBQ held at Dangar Falls in Dorrigo during Mental Health Month was a great success with over 100 people attending the event.

Many service representatives were on hand to provide a range of health and wellbeing information including people from the Mid North Coast Local Health District Health Promotion, Rural Adversity for Mental Health and Mental Health Service teams, Stand By Support After Suicide, CHESS Partners in Recovery, Community Transport and the Department of Human Services Farm Assistance Program.

Some great connections were made on the day between community members and services with people saying they didn’t know there were services available that could help provide support.

The day was also a great opportunity for different members of the community to get together with old friends and also meet new people.  All ages were represented including members of the Families NSW Playgroup in Dorrigo and seniors from the Dorrigo Support Centre.

After a traditional Welcome to Country by Robin Heath, CEO of the Dorrigo Plateau Local Aboriginal Land Council, attendees enjoyed lunch served by members of Dorrigo Rotary and Lions Club and were treated to a musical soundtrack provided by Kazoobafak, a jug band, performing at the Dorrigo Folk and Bluegrass Festival.

Mayor Dominic King extended a big thank you to everyone who made the event such a success including services, groups and businesses who provided financial and in-kind support, all the service representatives who came along to meet the community, promotors of the event and everyone who came on the day.

The Mayor added, “It was great to see so many members of the Dorrigo community come to this event. Building connections across a community and reducing social isolation is one of the best ways to improve health and wellbeing outcomes and I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making the day possible”.
