Take a load off your mind and take some time to look after yourself and each other at the free Bellingen Shire Community Barbeque to be held at the Dangar Falls picnic area, Coramba Road, Dorrigo on Thursday 24th October from 11:00am to 2:00pm.
Bellingen Shire Council Mayor, Cr Dominic King, said the free barbeque was the perfect opportunity for the community of Dorrigo and the rest of the shire to come together and share stories about the challenges and impacts of recent bushfires in a relaxed gathering of locals, friends and neighbours.
“Everybody knows of someone who has been impacted directly or indirectly by the recent fires,’ Cr King said.
“It could be a member of your family or even one of your friends, but I know there have been a lot of people in our Shire who have played a big part in trying to contain these fires or support the efforts of those who did.”
“That’s why I think it’s important that we all come together and share our journey as a community or simply be there to support each other and those who might need someone to talk to about how they feel.”
“Along with enjoying some great company and conversations, you’ll also enjoy the great food that’s on offer including a gourmet barbeque spread featuring beef, chicken, vegetarian and salad options.”
Cr King said the free barbeque had been organised as part of the program of activities for the region to celebrate Mental Health Month throughout the month of October.
“The aim of Mental Health Month is to encourage all of us to reflect on our mental health and wellbeing with this year’s theme being to ‘Share the Journey’ by acknowledging the importance of community and the common challenges we face.”
The free Community Barbeque will also be the onsite point of contact for a suite of government and volunteer support agencies including:
Dorrigo Plateau Local Aboriginal Land Council, Mid North Coast Local Health District Health Promotion, Rural Adversity Mental Health Program, Chess Connect, Mission Australia Family and Carers Mental Health Program, Bellingen Shire Community Drug Action Team, Stand By Support After Suicide, The Community Transport Company, NSW Supported Playgroup, the Dorrigo Youth Centre and Dorrigo Rotary.
