Teaching Children to Connect with Nature

The changing season was the theme of the Bellingen Shire Libraries children’s craft activities held over the recent school holidays.

During the first week children in Bellingen learnt how to make an Autumn leaf Suncatcher while Dorrigo and Urunga participants took part in Nature Weaving.  In the second week, all three libraries held a session on how to make a little wooden Anzac.

Colourful items found in the garden and outdoors were brought in for all to share and library staff and volunteers assisted the children with their creations.

Nature weaving activities combine creativity and the outdoors, it costs nothing and encourages exploration of textures and nature.  Children also develop concentration skills and are thrilled to have a finished product to take home.

The next series of craft workshops will be held during the July school holidays.
