Traffic behaviour in school zones

No Parking Sign

School opening and closing hours are busy times for pedestrian and vehicular traffic outside schools. Always take care in 40 km/h school zones, which operate on gazetted school days. Always model safe and considerate driving behaviour for your child, especially when driving in a school zone, or when dropping off or picking up passengers, as they are learning from your behaviour.

In response to increased concern from schools, and a number of reports of inconsiderate or dangerous driver behaviour in school zones, Council will be increasing levels of surveillance and enforcement in these areas. Please ensure that you are familiar with the types of signs in and around school zones, and be sure to follow the directions on the sign.

As a reminder, here are the most common signs and their meanings:

NO PARKING – You CAN stop in a NO PARKING zone for a maximum of two (2) minutes to drop off and pick up passengers. You must remain within 3 metres of your vehicle at all times.

BUS ZONE – You must NOT stop or park in a BUS ZONE unless you are driving a bus.

The 40km/h school speed zones operate across NSW at all school sites on gazetted school days (including school development days). Motorists should drive no faster than 40 km/h through school zones. Most school zones operate from 8 to 9.30am and from 2.30 to 4pm on gazetted school days.

There are a small number of non-standard school zone times in NSW. They are identified by red/orange school zone signs to show non-standard times. Signs at these schools show the times that apply.
