Enhancing Training at Urunga Surf Life Saving Club
Applicant: Urunga Surf Life Saving Club
Fund: Community Support Fund 2024/25 - Round 1
Funding: $2,272
This project involved upgrading the club’s training technology to better support the education and development of the volunteer lifesavers. Equipment was purchased and integrated into training operations at the clubhouse. Acquired items included a mobile porcelain whiteboard, a multimedia projector, and a ruggedised laptop. These items are now actively used in our First Aid, Resuscitation, Surf Rescue Certificate, and Bronze Medallion training sessions.
The outcomes of the equipment purchase included:
• Delivered more visual, interactive, and dynamic training sessions.
• Increased engagement, particularly among younger members, through the use of multimedia.
• Enabled digitisation of training materials, eliminating the need for printed resources.
• Replaced outdated equipment with modern, fit-for-purpose tools to enhance learning and operational efficiency.
Trainers have reported higher engagement levels and smoother delivery of complex materials. Members appreciated the improved visuals and interactive capabilities. Key learnings include the importance and the value of tech upgrades in volunteer retention. Early indicators suggest training attendance and satisfaction have increased since implementation.
"We are extremely grateful to Bellingen Shire Council for supporting this vital project. Enhancing our training capability has had an immediate and visible impact on volunteer development and morale. We welcome future collaboration to continue improving community safety and volunteer capacity." President, USLSC
