Road Safety

The NSW road network gives all of us access to work, school, friends, families, and the services we need. For many, it is a workplace, and for all, it is a fundamental part of everyday life that keeps the economy moving.

But sadly, lives are lost, and people are seriously injured on our roads every day. Each year, over two-thirds of fatalities in NSW happen on country roads.

Bellingen Shire Council is committed to improving road safety throughout its Local Government Area by:

Encouraging safe behaviour by all groups of road users in the community
Educating the community on the issues around drink driving, speed, fatigue, pedestrian safety, and restraint use.
Improving awareness, knowledge and understanding of the dangers of high-risk behaviours such as speeding and drink driving.
Working with government and community to address road safety issues.

Animals on Country Roads

Whether you are travelling through a country area or suburban street, animals, domestic and wild, can often wander onto the road unaware of the dangers of oncoming traffic.

Be Truck Aware

Due to their size and length, trucks have larger blind spots than the average car. This means truck drivers may not be able to see you. So, for everyone’s safety, be cautious when driving next to, or behind a truck – can they see you?

Leave Your Phone Alone

At 60 km/h if you look at your phone while driving for just two seconds, you travel 33 metres blind. A short lapse of concentration can have lifelong consequences.

Alcohol and other drugs

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol dramatically increases the chances of you having an accident resulting in death or serious injury of a family member, friend, innocent road user and yourself.

Child Car Seats

New child car seat safety ratings have been released to help parents and carers choose safe seats, and to encourage manufacturers to produce safer and easier-to-use products. Installation is key to child car seat protection with the risk of serious crash injuries decreasing by 7 times if a seat is correctly fitted.
