Active Leak Detection Project
The Active Leak Detection Project is part of the NSW Government’s $35.3 million Water Efficiency and Regional Leakage Reduction Program. To date, 23,325 kilometres of water mains have been surveyed, over 3750 leaks have been found, and 7,885ML/year of water leaks have been repaired by regional Councils.
By repairing these leaks councils are saving water and money, supported by specialist leak detectors to work closely with local water utilities.
Bellingen Shire Council has completed their Active Leak Detection Project, scheduled for September 2025.
- Total Leaks Found: 33 (129.2 L/min)
- Network-side Leaks Only: 28 (119.7 L/min)
- Customer-side Leaks Only: 5 (9.5 L/min)
- Length of mains inspected this period: 171.5 km
The program aims to increase water efficiency by eliminating leakage and water losses across regional water networks, which is essential as part of drought proofing the Bellingen Shire.
