About the project

Council is partnering with Transport for NSW to develop improvements that aim to make public spaces, and transport hubs feel safer, more welcoming and vibrant for everyone, especially women, girls and gender diverse people.

The upgrade aims to improve perceptions of safety in Urunga, especially at night. The project will focus on upgrading key walking paths and high pedestrian activity areas including routes to and from the train station.

Potential focus of the project will be on delivery of lighting upgrades to areas such as the Urunga CBD, Urunga Boardwalk and upcoming South Urunga Shared Path, as well as improvements to amenity facilitated through new wayfinding, street furniture and public art.

Focus areas will be finalised once community engagement is complete.

Funding

The project is funded through $1 million from Transport for NSW’s (Transport) Safer Cities: Her Way 2 Program.

The Safer Cities: Her Way Program supports local councils to deliver upgrades to improve perceptions of safety in public spaces and transport hub precincts for everyone, particularly women, girls, and gender diverse people when walking, cycling or accessing public transport.

Timeframe

The project is expected to be completed by 2028.

Community Engagement

To ensure community input is meaningfully incorporated into the project, Council will engage with women, girls, and gender diverse people from Urunga and across the Shire to identify priority areas in Urunga for improvement.

Community engagement will include a series of walking sessions, where community members, key stakeholders and Council staff will visit identified locations in Urunga to discuss their existing safety concerns and how they think the area could feel safer.

Following the walking sessions, selected participants will attend a workshop to collaborate with Council on an area of the design for the project, this may include elements of lighting, art or wayfinding.

Community surveys will also be conducted before and after project implementation to capture feedback and measure the outcome of the upgrades.
