Public Notice: Closure of Urunga Lido
Published on 08 August 2025
Crown Lands has temporarily closed the Urunga Lido beach to the public following the discovery of asbestos fragments.
The asbestos fragments are due to historic building waste in the river environs, which are periodically disturbed due to weather events and shifting sand.
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) - Crown Lands and Reflections Holidays are liaising on the issue.
DPHI has engaged asbestos experts to inspect the site and remove any visible waste, and to provide advice on ongoing management options.
The Urunga Lido beach will be closed until actions are completed to ensure there is no public risk.
Exclusion fencing has been established at the site and signage is in place to advise the public to not access the site until it is deemed safe.
If members of the public require further information they can email Crown Lands on 1300 886 235.
