The recent NSW Seniors Festival events in Bellingen Shire were a great success with events taking place in Bellingen, Dorrigo, Urunga and Mylestom that attracted seniors from across the Shire.

At the North Beach Bowling Club in Mylestom, over 80 seniors convened for a day filled with entertainment, insightful guest speakers, and a delicious lunch by Chan’s Chinese.

Among the speakers were Sue Lennox, the 2020 Senior of the Year and founder of OzGreen, who spoke about staying engaged as you age and Jade Parker from Service NSW, who shared valuable insights on utilizing the new Savings Finder tool.

The event commenced with a warm welcome to Country by Aunty Frances Witt, followed by a captivating musical performance by musician and percussionist Greg Sheehan. Greg delighted the audience by showcasing a number of everyday objects that create sound including a waterfilled salad bowl, cake tin and good old plastic bag. He had the audience tapping and moving to the sounds and ended his repertoire with a song from the sounds that can be made by playing squeaky animal toys which filled the room with laughter.

Representatives from organisations such as Livable, Each, Mid North Coast Health, CareXell, Community Transport, and Home Instead were present to chat to our Seniors one-on-one about the range of services on offer including in-home aged care packages to outings and transportation.

This event provided not only a platform for seniors to connect but also an invaluable opportunity to interface with service providers offering assistance tailored to their needs.

Additionally, Seniors Week featured several other successful events including a film screening at Urunga Library, a Cybersecurity workshop in Bellingen, and a morning tea hosted by the CWA in Dorrigo.

Deputy Mayor Cr Ellie Tree emphasised the significance of honouring the senior members of our community, stating ,"It’s important that we celebrate the senior members of our community, who have contributed a lifetime of experience and knowledge in our community, and what better way to do so than with entertainment and services that bring people together."

Council thanks everyone who participated and made the events possible.
