Council requests your comment on the proposed re-establishment of the Alcohol Free Zones in the Bellingen, Dorrigo and Urunga town centres, under s644B of the Local Government Act 1993.

Further, Council has proposed that Bellingen Park bounded by Church, Ford and Park Streets and Creek Lane be declared an Alcohol Prohibited Area under s632A of the Local Government Act 1993.

The Locations

The Alcohol Free Zones will encompass the areas detailed in the below maps.

Reasons supporting an Alcohol Free Zone

Irresponsible consumption of alcohol on roads and footpaths in the central business districts and adjoining areas of Bellingen, Dorrigo and Urunga compromises its safe use by members of the public who have the right to use it without interference. The consumption of alcohol in these areas has led to littering, vandalism of property, abuse of the public, loitering and other inappropriate behaviour which necessitates the introduction of the Alcohol Free Zones.

Duration of Alcohol Free Zone

The proposed Alcohol Free Zone will be established for a period of four (4) years (from June 2022 to March 2026) and will apply twenty-four (24) hours a day. A notice will be published 7 days prior to commencement.

The Alcohol Prohibited Zone will be in effect permanently and will apply between the hours of 9:00pm and 10:00am each day.

Submission

These proposals are available for inspection at Council’s Administration Centre Bellingen and libraries during normal business hours Monday to Friday inclusive from Monday 16th May 2022 to Thursday 16th June 2022.
