Council would like to advise residents that a sewer main overflow has occurred in North Bellingen resulting in a discharge in proximity to Lavenders Bridge.

It is understood that the cause of this overflow is due to tree roots blocking pipes. The discharge was detected early today with staff deployed immediately to stop the overflow.

As a result and for the safety of our community the Bellinger River is currently closed to swimming and signs have been erected.

Council is working collaboratively with NSW Government agencies and staff will be performing water monitoring over the coming days.

As soon as it’s deemed safe, the signs will be taken down and updated advice will be provided on our website and through social media to inform our community. Until then please refrain from recreational and swimming activities in the river.

This is an important reminder of just how important the protection of our waterways are. Find out more information on water care
