International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD)

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), held annually on 3 December, is a United Nations–sanctioned day that celebrates the achievements, contributions and leadership of people with disability around the world. IDPwD is an important opportunity for communities to reflect on the benefits of inclusion, remove barriers to participation, and work together to create environments where everyone can thrive.

The day promotes a greater understanding and acceptance of people with disability by challenging physical, technological and attitudinal barriers. 

Our Commitment to Inclusion

Bellingen Shire Council proudly acknowledges and celebrates IDPwD each year as part of our commitment to building an accessible, welcoming and inclusive community. Guided by our Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2022–2026, we aim to ensure that people with disability can participate equally in community life, access local services, and enjoy public spaces with dignity and independence.

Ian J. Cooper Access & Inclusion Awards

Every two years, Council hosts the Ian J. Cooper Access & Inclusion Awards to recognise individuals, community groups, organisations and businesses that demonstrate outstanding commitment to improving access and inclusion across the Shire. These awards honour the legacy of Ian J. Cooper and celebrate the positive impact of those who champion accessibility in everyday life.

How You Can Get Involved
  • Attend local IDPwD activities or events hosted by Council or community groups.
  • Nominate a person, business or organisation for the next Access & Inclusion Awards.
  • Promote inclusion in your workplace, school or social group by improving accessibility and challenging stereotypes.
  • Learn more about disability inclusion and the ways you can help build a stronger, more connected community.

By participating in IDPwD and supporting Council’s ongoing access and inclusion initiatives, our community helps shape a future where people of all abilities are respected, valued and able to participate fully in every aspect of life.
