Emissions Snapshot

The Bellingen Shire emissions snapshot provides information about the Shire’s total greenhouse gas emissions as well as a breakdown of emissions by sector.

The most recent snapshot reveals that approximately 47% of the Shire’s emissions are from transport, 31% from electricity, 17% from agriculture and 2% from waste.

Many of the Shire’s community groups, businesses and residents are working hard to reduce emissions through the installation of solar panels, the purchase of Greenpower, moving to regenerative agriculture practices and implementing waste reduction initiatives.

However, more work needs to be done in the transport space which is our biggest contributor to emissions. Moving towards active transport (walking, running and cycling) for short trips, using the bus where available and transitioning to electric vehicles will make a big difference to the Shire’s emissions.

For some active transport inspiration check out these short videos from local legends Lowanna and Kevin Doye (owners of Kombu Wholefoods) who, instead of flying, chose to spend 18 months cycling from the UK to Australia, raising awareness about climate change.
