Community Gardens
Community gardens are a great opportunity to grow food in a sustainable manner and share local knowledge. Bellingen Shire is home to four amazing community gardens. Check them out below and contact the gardens directly to get involved.
Northbank Community Garden
Northbank Community Garden is a 5-acre permaculture garden containing established fruit trees, vegetables, medicinal and culinary herbs, native bees, a communal gathering space, outdoor kitchen, composting toilet and garden plots for rent. Community members are encouraged to get involved by becoming a member, participating in a workshop or working bee or simply taking a stroll through to get some inspiration and see what’s in season. Dorrigo Community Nursery and Garden
Dorrigo Community Nursery and Garden grow a range of fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs for volunteers to harvest and consume. They also operate a community nursery selling a wide range of native trees, shrubs and groundcovers which will help to create habitat and restore biodiversity. They have many knowledgeable members who are keen to share their skills in bush regeneration, propagation, seed saving and food growing. Community members are encouraged to get involved by becoming a member, volunteering at a working bee, purchasing plants from the nursery or stopping by for a look around and a friendly chat.
Kalang Community Garden
Originally established in 2012 the Kalang Community Garden celebrated its reopening in December 2025. The garden is located at Kalang Farm (1860 Kalang Road), an organic farm and wildlife sanctuary. The garden is undergoing a planning phase hoping to build on the established fruit trees and create a food forest, garden beds and inviting space for members of the Kalang community and beyond. Mrs Wilson's Community Garden
Mrs Wilson's Community Garden is being established at the back of the CWA Building in Urunga. The garden will include raised beds for vegetables and herbs, fruit trees and bush tucker foods. A compost bin will be set up onsite allowing for the recycling of kitchen scraps. To get involved contact the CWA: urungacwa1@gmail.com
