What’s Happening with the Bellingen Courthouse?
The Bellingen Courthouse is a heritage building of strong community importance. While there is broad support for its restoration, the cost of refurbishment (around $8 million) and ongoing operating losses mean Council cannot responsibly take ownership or fund it.
So what is Council doing?
Council is continuing its role as an advocate and facilitator, working with others to explore whether the Courthouse can be restored and activated using external funding and partnerships.
What is the Courthouse Working Group?
Council is forming a Courthouse Working Group to help explore realistic options. The group:
- Is advisory only
- Is skills-based, not representative
- Does not make decisions or commit Council to funding
- Helps test ideas, investment models and governance options
Who will be on the Working Group?
People with skills and experience in areas such as:
- Arts, culture and heritage
- Business and economic development
- Philanthropy or investment
- Community and First Nations engagement
How can I apply to be a part of the Working Group?
If you or your organisation wishes to nominate a person, please provide:
Nominations should be submitted by Friday 8 May 2026.
What outcomes are being explored?
Possible pathways may include:
- Philanthropic funding
- Private sector partnerships
- Hybrid models that protect public access and heritage values
There is no guarantee that a viable solution will be found.
What Council will not do
- Council will not take ownership under current conditions
- Council will not fund refurbishment or ongoing operations
- Council will not commit ratepayers to financial risk
How will Council decide what happens next?
Council will receive regular updates and will only consider options that:
- Deliver clear public benefit
- Protect the building’s heritage
- Are financially sustainable without Council subsidy
