Celebrating our local heroes, and the contribution of our quiet achievers is at the heart of what makes our Shire the place we choose to live, work and play.
Historically Council has recognised the efforts of our community and facilitated awards programs as part of the annual Australia Day celebrations and over the past few years the awards categories have been refined to really localise the honours which started with the introduction of our Home-Grown Heroes Award recognising the people in our community that volunteer to ensure our Emergency Service and support groups remain active in times of need.
There are so many people in our community who are doing great things, leading by example and giving the most precious gift they can give, the gift of their time and attention to others which makes the community award program such a significant event in the Council calendar.
Importantly we also recognise that whilst Australia Day celebrations are a great opportunity to come together, not all members of our community celebrate this day so Council is actively discussing whether the community awards program could be better placed being held at a different time of year. For example on Harmony Day or during Volunteer Week on a more culturally appropriate day. An opinion board has been created to hear from our community, to inform further discussions, so please have your say and let’s continue to ensure our community programs and celebrations are inclusive and accessible by all.
