At its meeting in November 2025, Bellingen Shire Council resolved to undertake consultation with stakeholders regarding a proposal to seek NSW Government approval for the declaration of a local event half-day for the Dorrigo area on the Friday of the annual Dorrigo Show.
A local event day is a day recognised for its local significance, such as an agricultural show or community event. Importantly, it is not a public holiday, but provides an opportunity for businesses, employees and the broader community to participate in and support significant local events.
Council is now seeking your feedback on this proposal to inform a future report and any application to the NSW Minister for the Public Service and Employee Relations.
Proposal
That a half-day local event day (from midday) be declared for the Dorrigo area on the Friday of the annual Dorrigo Show weekend.
Purpose of the Proposal
The intent of the proposed local event half-day is to:
- Support attendance at the Dorrigo Show
- Encourage volunteer participation
- Strengthen community connection
- Provide economic benefit to local businesses
What a Local Event Day Means
- It applies only to the defined local area (in this case, Dorrigo and District)
- It is not a mandatory closure day – businesses may choose whether to participate
- Employment arrangements (including pay and leave) remain subject to relevant industrial agreements
