Project Update - September
Bellingen Shire Council, in partnership with the NSW Government, is currently delivering the Sewering Coastal Villages scheme, a major infrastructure project aimed at providing a modern, sustainable sewerage service to our coastal communities of Mylestom and parts of Raleigh.
Phase 1 – Completion of Urunga Sewerage Treatment Plant Upgrade
In a milestone moment for the Sewering Coastal Villages project, the upgrade to the Urunga Sewerage Treatment Plant has been successfully completed - on time and on budget. The upgraded plant now has the capacity to service 10,000 homes, including the coastal villages of Mylestom and parts of Raleigh which will be connected to the network over the next 12 months.
Key Features of the upgrade include:
- A second 5,000-person IDEA reactor (Intermittently Decanted Extended Aeration)
- New inlet works for improved treatment efficiency
- New chemical dosing facilities
- Two new sludge lagoons
- Mechanical sludge dewatering system
- Sludge storage facility
- UV Disinfection System
- Upgraded electrical systems and associated infrastructure
- Comprehensive pipework, drainage, and treatment facilities to support the expanded 10,000-person capacity
The completion of this phase represents a major achievement in improving wastewater services for our coastal communities, supporting population growth, and protecting the local environment for years to come.
Phase 2 – Project Update
The second phase of the Sewering Coastal Villages Scheme is well underway, with the construction of the sewer rising mains along Giinagay Way, Yellow Rock Road, Norco, and the Raleigh Industrial Estate now nearing completion.
Recent pressure testing of the new pipes along Yellow Rock Road has been successfully completed, confirming the quality and integrity of the installation.
Construction of the sewer pump stations at Mylestom and Raleigh are scheduled to commence in October. These pump stations will play a critical role in transferring wastewater from each village to the upgraded Urunga Sewerage Treatment Plant.
The next part of Phase 2 involves connecting Mylestom and parts of Raleigh to the new network. Progress to date includes:
- Establishment of a construction compound at Mylestom Oval and delivery of the first Pressure Sewer Units
- Commencement of property connection works in Raleigh
- Ongoing electrical works throughout Mylestom and Raleigh
- Street main installation in Mylestom scheduled to commence in mid-October
This continued progress represents another important step toward delivering a reliable, modern sewerage service for the coastal communities of Mylestom and Raleigh.
