About the Project

Martells Road is a combination of sealed and unsealed pavement that runs along the Kalang River from the outskirts of Bellingen to Giinagay Way, 1km south of the township of Urunga through the Newry State Forest. Due to major rain events in combination with flooding, several sections of Martells Road have significantly deteriorated and require rehabilitation.

Project Scope

The Scope of the Project Includes:

Clearing and tree removal where required
Cleaning and Widening Drains
Extension/Replacement of Drainage Culverts
Formation Widening
Pavement Rehabilitation – 3.1km
Sealing of Unsealed sections of Road – 1.44km

Community Impacts

Once road works start there will be traffic control on the road, meaning there may be some delays through work zones. During any major disruptions, notifications to the community will be provided via online channels and VMS boards.

Project Update 27 October 2023

We are excited to share the latest progress on Martells Road Project. Here is a summary of the completed and ongoing activities:

Completed Activities:

Successfully completed the formation renewal and bitumen sealing of approximately 1.5 kilometers from Giinagay Way connect to the existing bitumen seal at the overbridge over the new Pacific Highway.

Culvert Extensions: Drainage upgrades include culvert extensions to widen the road in problem spots, 2 of these have been completed to date

Ongoing Activities:

Pavement rehabilitation works have commenced work from the western end of Martells Rd, from the intersection with Bowraviile Road heading East
Approximately 3.1Kms of pavement rehabilitation is planned (refer to the project plan below for details).

Other activities:

Separate to the renewal and upgrade project, Council has progressed scheduled maintenance grading of 7km of the unsealed section
Shoulder grading work has been successfully completed, ensuring a free draining road surface mean the grading works will last longer before the next round of maintenance
